Omaha Men lose at ASU

TEMPE, Ariz. — The Omaha men’s basketball team continued its road swing Wednesday night, falling 89-71 to Arizona State at Wells Fargo Arena. The Mavericks are now 3-5 on the season, while the Sun Devils improve to 6-0.

Leaders for Omaha
Zach Jackson led a contingent of three double-figure scorers for the Mavericks, finishing with 17 points on four 3-pointers. Matt Pile shot 7-of-8 en route to 15 points with a team-high five rebounds, an assist, a steal and two blocks. JT Gibson added 12 points with four 3-pointers.

Leaders for Arizona State
Arizona State’s Zylan Cheatham was an assist shy of a triple-double, finishing with 13 points, 12 rebounds, nine assists and two steals. Luguentz Dort and Taeshon Cherry had 19 points apiece, and Kimani Lawrence added 18.

Team Stats
ASU shot .516 (33-of-64) to Omaha’s .459 (28-of-61), and the Mavericks hit at a .500 (13-of-26) clip from 3-point range. The Sun Devils had the advantage on the glass, 41-27, including 14-7 on the offensive end.

Inside the First Half
Jackson hit 3-of-5 from deep and tallied 14 points in the opening 20 minutes, while Pile was 6-of-7 with 13 points. Midway through the half, the Mavericks went on a 9-0 run with three consecutive triples from Gibson and Jackson to go up 25-17 with 9:50 to go. But ASU responded with a 7-0 run from there and led 50-40 at the half.

Inside the Second Half
Omaha, which shot .533 (16-of-30) in the first half, cooled to .387 (12-of-31) in the second stanza had just one bucket in the first five-and-a-half minutes. Three straight 3-pointers opened the second half for ASU, and the Sun Devils eventually stretched their run to 16-2 for a 66-42 advantage.

Noting Tonight’s Game
-Gibson has scored in double figures in all but one game this season and has a double-figure streak of six straight contests. He has made at least three 3-pointers in five consecutive contests.
-Jackson has scored in double figures in every game of the season.
-Omaha is now 0-1 against Arizona State.
