Omaha Softball wins at Coppin State

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Omaha softball team rallied for a comeback win over Coppin State Thursday afternoon, defeating the Eagles 10-5 at the CSU Softball Field. With the win, UNO improved to 10-11 on the season, while Coppin State dropped to 2-6.

Laura Roecker (1-3) earned the win in relief, throwing 6.0 innings allowing two unearned runs with three hits, five walks and eight strikeouts. The loss went to Coppin State starter Madison Didion (1-2), who gave up 10 runs on 16 hits over seven innings.

A 4-for-5 day with four RBI from Emily Klosterman led Omaha. Jessica Nelson added a 4-for-4 effort with two RBI, three runs scored and three stolen bases. Natalie Mostek (3-for-4, one stolen base, three runs) had a multi-hit effort, as did Kelly Pattison (2-for-4, home run, three RBI). Emma Dargy added a solo homer.

The Mavericks trailed 5-1 early, as the Eagles scored three unearned runs in the first and two unearned runs in the third.

UNO got on the board in the top of the second inning as Dargy led off with a solo shot over the right-field fence. Omaha drew closer in the top of the fourth. With two outs, Mostek and Nelson both singled to center. Pattison then launched a 3-2 offering over the center field wall to make it a one-run game.

Omaha took the lead in the sixth, scoring two runs with four hits. Mostek hit a one-out triple and scored on Nelson’s RBI single through the right side to tie the ballgame at 5-5. Nelson then stole second and third base before scoring on Klosterman’s bunt single, which put the Mavericks in front, 6-5.

Omaha added four runs in the top of the seventh on three hits. The Mavericks loaded the bases with one out. Nelson delivered an RBI single to center, making it 7-5. Klosterman lined a three-run double to center field to push the lead to 10-5.

Coppin State loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but Roecker worked out of the jam getting a strikeout and a pop fly.

Omaha resumes play on Friday, March 9 at the Blue-White Classic in Hampton, Va. The Mavericks open tournament play against La Salle at 8:30 a.m., and play host Hampton at 12:30 p.m.
