BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Omaha volleyball team earned a 3-1 win in its Summit League opener at South Dakota State Friday evening off double-digit kills by four players.
The Mavericks defeated the Jackrabbits in four sets (17-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-22) to improve to 6-7 on the season.
Leaders for Omaha
Sadie Limback recorded her first-career double-double with 10 kills and 17 digs. Isabella Sade tallied a match-best 15 kills, while Claire Leonard followed with 13 on a match-high .321 hitting percentage. Anna Blaschko rounded out the double-digit kill performance with 10. At setter, Sydney Case had 48 assists in the match while Claire Mountjoy notched 19 digs.
Head Coach Rose Shires is now at 499 career wins.
Omaha improves to 42-20 overall against South Dakota State.
Omaha hit .196 against the Jackrabbits, which marked a season-low in hitting percentage for matches won.
The Mavericks were previously 0-6 when hitting under .200 as a team.
The Mavericks recorded more kills (54-41), assists (51-39) and digs (59-50) than SDSU.
SDSU recorded won the blocking battle 10-6.
Omaha is now 4-1 when four or more players record double-digit kills.
Inside Set 1
The slow start plagued the Mavericks in the opening set. Omaha fell into an 11-6 hole and could never erase the deficit. Despite a 4-0 run late in the set, the Mavericks eventually fell 25-17.
Inside Set 2
Omaha rallied off back-to-back kills by Sade and Limback to take an 8-5 lead. The momentum swung in the Mavericks’ favor after three straight points off kills by Sade, which gave Omaha a 16-9 lead. South Dakota State, however, answered with a 6-0 run and eventually tied the match at 19-19. Omaha pulled ahead for a 24-21 lead, but two straight Jackrabbit points made it 24-23. An SDSU error gave the Mavericks the set point and tied the match at 1-1.
Inside Set 3
The Mavericks finally pulled ahead by a score of 10-6 off a pair of kills by Blaschko and Leonard, along with an SDSU attack error. The Jackrabbits cut Omaha’s lead to one, but Limback responded with a crucial kill to make it 16-14. Omaha saw its lead, once again, cut to just two points (20-18), but put its foot on the gas pedal and closed out the set with a 5-0 run (25-18) to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Inside Set 4
Once again, the early portion of the set was close as Omaha maintained a 10-7 lead. Leonard tallied her 11th kill of the match to force a Jackrabbit timeout, as the Mavericks led 16-13. Out of the break, Omaha continued its 6-1 run and eventually increased the cushion to seven. South Dakota State did not go away, and forced an Omaha timeout when it cut the lead to just three. Omaha had the match point within its grasp, but SDSU scored another point to make it a score of 24-22. In the conclusion of the set, the match point for Omaha came off an attack error by the Jackrabbits.
