Omaha Women come up just short at Oral Roberts

OMAHA, Neb. – Despite a double-double from freshman Elena Pilakouta, the Omaha women’s basketball team fell just short in a 65-64 loss to Oral Roberts on Thursday at the Mabee Center.

Leaders for Omaha
Pilakouta tallied her second double-double of the season with 18 points and 11 rebounds.  She shot 9-for-13 from the floor with an assist and a blocked shot.  Freshman Josie Filer added 13 points, six rebounds two assists and a blocked shot.  Fellow freshman Mariah Murdie went for 11 points and five boards.

Senior Kalen Phillips chipped in eight points, including a 6-for-6 effort at the line, while freshman Sophie Johnston scored eight points, three assists and two boards.

Leaders for Oral Roberts
Maya Mayberry scored a game-high 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the floor, including three 3-pointers.  KeniJo Lippe added 17 points on 6-for-9 shooting with five rebounds.  Beatty scored eight points with eight rebounds.

Team Stats
Omaha converted 46.2 percent (24-for-52) from the floor, including 33.3 percent (5-for-15) from 3-point distance.  The Mavericks hit 78.6 percent (11-for-14) at the line.  The Mavericks held a 37-25 advantage on the boards.

Oral Roberts shot 45.5 percent (25-for-55) from the floor, including a 36.4 percent (8-for-22) effort from long range.  The Golden Eagles shot 77.8 percent (7-for-9) at the line.  ORU turned 17 UNO turnovers into 14 points while committing only seven turnovers for the game.

Inside the First Half
Oral Roberts took an early 8-5 lead on a 3-pointer from Mayberry.  A pair of Phillips free throws followed by a Pilakouta layup gave Omaha a 12-10 lead with 5:35 left in the period.  The Mavericks went on to outscore the Golden Eagles 12-5 the remainder of the period to lead 24-15 after the opening 10 minutes.

The Mavericks were limited to 18.2 percent (2-for-11) from the field and outscored 19-5 in the second period.  Mayberry scored the final four points of the half to give ORU a 34-29 lead at the half.

Inside the Second Half
Omaha came out firing to start the second half, cutting the Oral Roberts lead to 38-36 following a Filer 3-pointer.  The Mavericks regained the lead briefly on a trey by Killian at 41-40 with 6:48 remaining in the quarter.  A Regan Schumacher bucket gave the lead back to ORU at the midpoint of the stanza.  The remainder of the period saw two ties and five lead changes with Omaha taking a 53-52 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Sophie Johnston hit a 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter to take a two-point advantage, 56-54.  A pair of Phillips’
free throws put Omaha ahead 64-61 with 2:29 left to play in the fourth.  The Golden Eagles forced a turnover with seven seconds left on the clock.  Following an Oral Roberts timeout, Beatty drove the lane to put the Golden Eagles up one with four seconds remaining.  Omaha had one last chance to win the game, but the Mavericks were called for an offensive foul that gave ORU the victory 65-64.

The loss dropped Omaha to 8-20 on the season and 2-13 in Summit League play, while Oral Roberts moved to 17-12 overall and 10-6 in conference play.
