YORK – York College jumped on the board quickly and never looked back as they picked up their first conference win over Bethany College Wednesday night 83-66. The Panthers used balanced scoring, five players scored in double figures, and a tenacious defense to secure the win.
Head Coach Tree Burks said their game plan was “to keep their up-tempo offense they are known for and challenge defensively to hold them to less than 74 points. We were able to do that and that’s why we were able to pick up the win.”
York’s offense was hot all night as they shot 55% from the field. Their defense held the Swedes to 37% from the field. The Swedes out rebounded the Panthers 40-36, with a plus eight on the offensive end.
York was led by Nevell Lenard (SR/Los Angeles, Calif) as he scored 19 points in just 22 minutes of action. Aaron Munday-Rashid(JR/Melbourne, Australia) scored 13, while Patrick Burnett (SR/Erie, Pa) added 12 points to go along with a team high nine rebounds. Michael Tolbert (JR/Apopka, Fla) and Andrew Stafford (SR/Dallas, Texas) each added 10 points.
An unusual stat for the Panthers was their ability to outscore the Swedes 54-40 inside the paint.
York led by as many as 24 points in the game and saw 14 players get in the game. York improves to 3-3 on the season and 1-0 in the KCAC.
The Panthers travel to play Bethel College on Saturday in North Newton, Kansas. The game is scheduled for a 5:00 p.m. tip off.
