LINCOLN – In their first state tournament appearance since 2013, the Fillmore Central girls basketball team got their first-ever tourney win Thursday night, defeating Nebraska City Lourdes 53-41 at Lincoln Southwest High School. The third-seeded Panthers never trailed in the game against the sixth-seed Lady Knights.
It was a very balanced attack that was too much for the Knights, as four different FC players scored in each of the four quarters of the game. With four of the five starters scoring in the first quarter, FC opened up a 12-9 lead. A strong 18 point second quarter propelled the Panther girls to a 30-23 halftime lead.
After an early bucket by Fillmore Central put them up by nine to start the third period, NC Lourdes scored six unanswered points to quickly cut the lead to three. But Coach Shad Eberhardt’s squad regained control and extended the lead to 42-32 by the end of the third quarter.
The balanced attack continued in the final frame, and the Panthers squelched any attempts by Nebraska City Lourdes to cut into the Panther lead.
Fillmore Central was led in scoring by junior Erin Schmidt’s 16 points. Junior Halle Theis scored 15, sophomore Jacquelyn Schelkopf and freshman Lexi Theis each had 8, and junior Macy Scott finished with 6 points.
The Knights were led by sophomore Brianna Fulton with 15 points, and sophomore Gina McGowen added 8.
With the win, Fillmore Central upped their season record to 23-4, and moves on to play perennial power Crofton in the semifinals Friday afternoon at 3:45 at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. You can hear the game on 104.9 Max Country.
