ALBION – The Pender Senior American Legion Baseball Team came close to winning their first state title in program history, when the played David City in the Class C title game on Wednesday, August 1 in Albion, heard on 107.9 The Bull.
David City grabbed a 6-0 lead after the third innings.
Pender started to chip away, scoring three runs in the fourth and three in the fifth to tie the game at 6-6.
But things got away from Pender late as David City broke a 6-6 tie in the bottom of the sixth, scoring four runs to eventually win the game 10-6.
The loss gave the Pender Seniors their fourth state runner-up finish in program history.
Jacob Zuhlke had a pair of hits and two RBIs, Aaron Ras had two singles and an RBI and Lucas Vogt had an RBI hit.
Eric Schopke started on the mound, going 2.1 innings, allowing six runs on four hits and three walks. Devin Hegge finished the gae in relief, allowing four runs on five hits, striking out three.
Pender ends the season with a 19-8 record, and as the Class C State Runner-Up.
