Kearney, Neb. – The second-ranked Nebraska-Kearney wrestling team had 13 placers at the annual Doane University Open Saturday in Crete. The non-team scoring meet included area NAIA schools and junior colleges as well as wrestlers from Nebraska-Lincoln. This was UNK’s last open tournament of the fall semester. Third-ranked Josh Portillo (Clarion, Ia.) was the lone Loper winner, going 5-0 at 125 pounds. His day included three tech falls by a combined score of 61-10 and two majors with a combined total of 31-5. Sophomore Wesley Dawkins (141 lbs.) and true freshman Teontae Wilson (149 lbs.) both came in second with senior Michael Lambert (184 lbs.) and juniors Jace LaCaille (197 lbs.) and JD Rader (133 lbs.) and sophomore Jonathan Killingsworth (141 lbs.) finishing third. The other top five placers were junior Jarrod Hinrichs (5th/285 lbs.), sophomore Talon Seitz (T-4th/165 lbs.) and true freshman Terrell Garraway (T-4th/165 lbs.). Portillo is now 14-3 after his domination performance with Grenta true freshman Van Schmidt going 4-2 at 125 pounds as well. Rader (Jewell, Ia.) had four wins by decision, including a 4-1 tally over UNL’s Jordan Kelber, to finish third with Dawkins (Lincoln H.S.) winning his first five matches before falling to UNL’s Chad Red in the 141 pound finals. Dawkins did record two first period falls and edged Killingsworth (Lincoln S.E.), 5-4, in the semis.
Killingsworth’s five wins featured falls in 20 and 32 seconds, respectively. Next, Wilson (Kearney H.S.) had three falls and a 14-10 decision to reach the 149 pounds finals. There he fall to Grand View’s Devin Reynolds. Colorado senior Nick Babcock had one of the busiest days as tied for sixth in this class. He bounced back from an opening round loss to a ‘Husker to reel off six straight wins. He didn’t advance by rule and then there was a double forfeit in the fifth place match. Seitz (Hilton Head, S.C.) and Garraway (Lenexa, Kan.) had to face each other in the 165 pound third place match and thus there was another double forfeit. Seitz went 4-1 with three falls while Garraway had two falls among his four wins. Lambert (Fremont) reached the 184 pound semis before suffering a 5-3 setback to GVU’s Artie Bess. His five wins included a 3-1 decision in sudden victory over Joe Robinson (LWU-Belleville) who is ranked third in the NAIA.
Also at this weight, senior Corey Van Dorn (Orange Park, Fla.) came in sixth as he was another Loper to win five times. He won four straight matches before suffering an OT loss to Lambert in the consolation semis. At 197 pounds, Gretna senior Brady Radik tied for sixth as there was another double forfeit in a placing match. LaCaille (Georgetown, Texas) had an impressive 5-1 day before forfeiting in the third place bout. Finally, Hinrichs had four more wins including a 41 second fall. UNK’s varsity will stick around after finals this week to take on Colorado State-Pueblo on the road next Saturday, December 15. The rest of the Lopers will compete again on Saturday, December 29, at the Viking-Warrior Open in Fremont.
