UNO Softball concludes year with loss to Western Illinois

OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha softball team closed its 2019 season with an 8-6 loss to Western Illinois on Sunday in the final contest for four Maverick seniors.

Jamie White was 2-for-3 with two home runs and five RBI to lead Omaha offensively.  Emma Dargy finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.  Savannah Fisher went 2-for-3, while Alexa Sedlak and Sydney Schelkopf each doubled.

Aly Compton finished 2-for-4 with three RBI to lead Western Illinois. Hailey Duwa went 1-for-1 with two RBI and walked three times.

Savannah Rodriguez (1-3) picked up the win, allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits and three walks while striking out six over 5.1 innings.  The loss went to Ryanne Millington (2-15), who surrendered three runs on a hit and four walks over 1.2 innings.  Abby Carlin earned her second save of the year for WIU, throwing 1.2 shutout innings with just one hit.  Omaha’s Halley Jones allowed five runs on eight hits and four walks while fanning three over 5.1 innings.

Omaha got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first.  Dargy opened the game with a single to center and then scored on White’s two-run blast to left field that put the Mavericks ahead 2-0.

The lead was short-lived, however, as Western Illinois scored three runs without a hit in the top of the second.  The Fighting Leathernecks scored their first run as a pitch hit Payton Abbott with the bases loaded to force in a run.  WIU drew back-to-back walks with the bases full to take the 3-2 advantage.

WIU opened up for four more runs on five hits in the top of the fourth.  Duwa and Halle Hollatz each hit RBI singles.  Compton followed with a two-run single to make it 7-2.

Omaha scored twice in the bottom half of the fifth on White’s second two-run homer of the day.

Western Illinois added an insurance run on two hits and two walks in the sixth to make it an 8-4 game.

The Mavericks scored two more runs in the bottom half of the frame.  Fisher led off with a single to right and Lauren Lauvetz reached on a fielder’s choice.  After a sacrifice bunt moved the runners up a base, Dargy hit an RBI single to right.  Following a hit batsman and a pitching change, White drew a bases-loaded walk to force in a run and make it 8-6.  Carlin settled down a retired the next two batters to end the inning.

In the bottom of the seventh, Schelkopf doubled with one out, but Carlin again retired the next two batters to preserve the win.

Omaha caps the year with a record of 4-43 (2-16 Summit League), while the Fighting Leathernecks finish the regular season at 20-19 (12-6) with a nine-game win streak heading into next week’s Summit League Tournament.
