WSC softball adds two players during NCAA spring signing period

Wayne State College head softball coach Shelli Manson announced Thursday that Ashley Bohannon from Tekamah and Shelby Brodkorb of Harrisburg, South Dakota have made commitments to the Wildcat softball program during the recent NCAA spring signing period to continue their academic and athletic careers at Wayne State College in 2018-19. The two players join six others – Makenna Adkison of Gilbert, Arizona, Kortney Buresh from Bellevue, Parker Mathews of Indianola, Iowa, Michaela Smith from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Kamryn Sparks of Kansas City, Kansas and Kimberly Vidlak of Bennington as members of the 2018-19 recruiting class.

Ashley Bohannon is a 5-9 pitcher from Tekamah-Herman High School who is a three-year letter winner in softball and two-year starter. As a senior, she led the Tigers to a 24-8 record and was named Class C Second Team All-State by the Lincoln Journal Star and Omaha World Herald as a pitcher, posting a 22-8 mark in the circle with a 2.45 ERA. Bohannon struck out 212 batters in 163 innings pitched while at the plate recorded a .471 batting average with six homers and 25 RBI.
During her junior season, Bohannon had a 10-2 record and a 1.34 ERA with 80 strikeouts in 57 1/3 innings and hit .417 at the plate with five home runs and 21 RBI. Bohannon also excels in the classroom earning Academic All-State honors in softball and basketball.

“We are very excited to add Ashley to our pitching staff,” commented Coach Manson. “She has great velocity and throws a nice mix of pitches to all planes. She will fit in nicely with our returning pitching staff.”

Shelby Brodkorb is a 5-4 catcher from Harrisburg High School in South Dakota where she is a three-year starter. During her senior season, Brodkorb carried a .391 batting average and .551 slugging percentage while being named to the South Dakota High School Fastpitch All-State Class A Second Team. She was selected Most Valuable Player as a senior and defensive MVP as a junior and senior and was named to the Class A State Tournament Team during senior season.

“We are happy to have Shelby join our program,” stated Manson. “She will add depth to the catching staff and we look forward to her working with our pitchers.”

Wayne State College is an NCAA Division II school located in Wayne, Nebraska and competes in the 16-team Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The Wildcats finished the 2018 season with a record of 16-29 overall and placed 11th in the NSIC with a 10-16 league mark.
