WSC Women handle Graceland

Sophomore guard Evelyn Knox poured in a career-high 15 points to lead Wayne State College in a 89-52 non-conference women’s college basketball win Thursday evening over Graceland University of Iowa at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. WSC improves to 4-2 on the year while Graceland is 2-5.

Wayne State never trailed in the contest, taking a 17-7 lead just under eight minutes into the contest before finishing the first quarter with a 22-11 advantage.

The ‘Cats outscored the Yellowjackets 25-9 in the second quarter to take a 47-20 lead at intermission, canning 5 of 10 3-pointers to help increase the lead.

The third quarter saw the Wildcats take a 73-29 lead after producing a 26-point third quarter.

Reserves dominated the play in the fourth quarter as the Wildcats ended with the 89-52 victory.

Knox was one of 12 Wildcat players to score and had 15 points to lead Wayne State. Freshman guard Halley Busse added 12 points with senior center Paige Ballinger scoring 10.

Wayne State made 26 of 62 shots from the field for 41.9 percent and was 13 for 33 (39.4%) behind the arc. The Wildcats made 24 of 26 free throws (92.3%).

Alexis Matthews-Fells paced Graceland with 16 points followed by Kailey Boden with 15.

Graceland was 14 of 51 from the field for 27.5 percent and 4 of 11 from the 3-point line while making 20 of 23 free throws.

The Yellowjackets held a 41-32 edge in rebounding over the Wildcats thanks to eight rebounds from Jaycee Cleaver while Wayne State’s top rebounder was Maggie Schulte with six.

Wayne State forced 31 turnovers in the contest and had just 13 to result in a sizeable 37-9 advantage in points off turnovers.

Maggie Lowe had five of Wayne State’s 21 assists in the game while Ballinger was credited with four blocked shots.

The Wildcats will be at home again Monday evening hosting Augustana in the Northern Sun Conference opener with tip off set for 6 p.m. in Rice Auditorium.
