Wayne State’s Jacob Protzman was named Monday afternoon the Northern Sun Conference Defensive Player of the Week by the league office in Burnsville, Minnesota following his performance in Saturday night’s 23-14 NSIC road win at Southwest Minnesota State. It’s the first time that Protzman has collected NSIC Player of the Week honors.
Protzman, (prawts – mun) a 6-4, 250-pound junior defensive end from Grimes, Iowa (Dallas Center-Grimes HS), recorded five sacks for 34 yards and had eight total tackles with six solo stops in Saturday’s win over the Mustangs. His performance highlighted a WSC defense that notched eight total sacks and allowed just 142 yards of total offense in the victory.
The five sacks in a single game topped the previous school record of four set by Brad Ottis in 1992 vs. Iowa Wesleyan.
Wayne State, 1-1 on the season, hosts South Division rival Augustana in an NSIC contest starting at 6 p.m. at Bob Cunningham Field in Wayne.
