Wichita, KAN. – York College scored two goals in the final five minutes of play to stun the host Friends Falcons and advance to the KCAC semifinals with the 2-1 victory. Amber Jimenez (FR/Gilbert, Ariz) scored the Panthers first goal in the 86th minute as she followed a shot from Breanna Bembenek (FR/New Lenox, Ill) that was saved by the Falcons’ goalkeeper. On the deflection from the keeper Jimenez took the rebound and tied the game. Two minutes later Bembenek finished off the scoring converting the penalty kick; awarded due to a hand ball in the penalty area.
The game brought back memories from the teams’ matchup just two weeks prior. In that game on October 18, it was the Panthers who owned the 1-0 lead until the final five minutes, when the Falcons snuck two goals in to escape with the win. This time the Panthers got to celebrate on the final whistle as their season survived.
York was outshot 20-10 on the day, but the Panthers held the edge with shots on goal 9-5. Jimenez and Nadia Rodriguez (SR/Denver Colo) led the Panthers with two shots on goal.
Cassandra Martinez (SO/Madera, Calif) picked up the win in goal as she had four saves on the day.
York continues to improve their record breaking season with an overall record of 10-7-2 on the season. York will travel down to Bartlesville, Oklahoma on Wednesday to face off against top seeded Oklahoma Wesleyan.
