The Union Bar will be the host of a Veterans Day fundraiser to help military members get home for the holidays.
The Gering establishment will offer their traditional free meal for veterans Sunday from 11am to 2pm, but will also make the roast beef dinner available to the public for $8 a plate.
Owner Scott Swanson says he didn’t hesitate when approached about supporting the cause, but decided to go all out and “do it right”. In addition to the meal, the event will include live and silent auctions as well as a raffle, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to Operation Ride Home, a project by Jack Daniels distillery.
Swanson says community members are already talking about the effort, even those who may not think they can afford the meal. “A lady called my wife (Wednesday) and told her she had a jar of change she would like to give,” says Swanson, “She said she was very poor, but a lot of her family has been in the military and there’s been times where she’s had kids and people like that who couldn’t afford to get from a military base to home for the holidays. So she wanted to donate a jar of change she’s been saving.”
Swanson says he’s prepared to serve upwards of 250 meals during Sunday’s fundraiser.
