(AUDIO) Fremont Fire Department talks Fire Safety During the Winter with KTIC Radio

There are many things people should do in their homes when it comes to Fire Safety in the Winter. That’s according to Fremont Fire Chief Todd Bernt, who tells KTIC News that people should make sure equipment is working properly.

Bernt also tells KTIC News about proper use of Space Heaters.

Bernt reminds people to change the battery in their smoke detectors this weekend when changing clocks, adding people will want to have one on each level of one’s home, in each living quarters, and change all the batteries twice a year, once in the Spring, and then again in the Fall.

Bernt says cooking fires are preventable.

Bernt reminds people to keep kids away from the stove so they don’t get burned.

He suggests practicing fire drills.

Bernt says a small fire can engulf a room in just a few minutes.

He recommends crawling low during the fire drills as smoke and heat rises.
