Driver hospitalized as towed van whips SUV out of control on I-80 near Sunol

Cheyenne County authorities say the driver of an SUV was sent to the hospital for his injuries following an accident Thursday afternoon on Interstate 80.

Sheriff Adam Frerichs tells KNEB News a 1995 GMC Suburban pulling a 1998 Plymouth Voyager was westbound on I-80 around 4:14 p.m. when the van started to fishtail near the Sunol exit.

Deputies say the driver, Robert DeSimone, lost control and both fully-loaded vehicles made a 360 degree spin, after which they separated and rolled. Investigators say SUV rolled once, landing upright in the median, while the van rolled at least twice, landing upright in the driving lane of eastbound I-80 and leaving debris across the entire roadway.

Frerichs tells us DeSimone was taken to Sidney Regional Medical Center by Regional West Ambulance, however the extent of injuries to a passenger, Ronald Edres, were not immediately available.

Nebraska Department of Transportation closed the eastbound lanes of the Interstate for about half an hour for investigation and clean-up. Nebraska State Patrol and Lodgepole Volunteer Fire also responded to the scene.
