As runners, walkers, organizers and volunteers get ready for Saturday’s 2019 Monument Marathon, plans are already in the works for a new event for September of 2020.
A poster board graphic at the Health Expo at the Gering Civic Center Friday announces a three-runner half-marathon will be added to the race next year, to begin at the same time as the 5k.
Coordinator Jennifer Reisig tells KNEB News the addition stems from multiple requests over the years to add a 10k to the annual event. “The way this course is with the Monument being the focal point of the course, it’s not easy for us to add a 10k distance,” says Reisig. “This is the fourth year of the 5k, we were able to add that by looping back on that canal road, but there’s not a good place to add a 10k distance and this gives us really three legs that was close to that 10k distance.”
Reisig says registration for the new relay should start this November and it will be something different for runners to take on while using the existing infrastructure without adding a lot to the overall planning of the marathon.
515 runners and walkers, the second-most ever, had signed up for this year’s Marathon as of about 2 p.m.
The health expo continues until 8 p.m. tonight, with a pasta feed at 5 p.m. to be followed by a guest speaker.
