A 61 year old Bridgeport man is facing numerous charges following an incident in Morrill County Tuesday evening.
According to the Nebraska State Patrol, troopers were called to assist the Morrill County Sheriff’s Office with an armed subject barricaded in a home on Road 91 in Morrill County.
After troopers arrived on scene a man exited the residence carrying a handgun. The Patrol says the man appeared to be intoxicated and walked to a vehicle refusing verbal commands given by the troopers.
The subject, later identified as Rex Schmidt, entered a Ford F-150 pickup and drove away from the scene. Troopers quickly located the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. Schmidt refused to stop and eventually returned to the residence at on Road 91.
The Patrol says troopers again gave verbal commands to Schmidt, who again refused to comply before he was physically subdued and then transported to the Bridgeport Hospital to be medically cleared. While at the hospital, the patrol says Schmidt refused to submit to a court-ordered blood draw. After medical clearance, he was arrested and transported to the Scotts Bluff County Detention Center.
Schmidt faces charges of operating a motor vehicle to avoid arrest, obstructing a peace officer, resisting arrest, driving under the influence of alcohol, refusing to submit to a chemical test, and contempt of court.
No law enforcement officers were injured in the incident.
