North Platte teen drowns

North Platte, Neb. — Divers have pulled the body of a 16-year-old boy from a small lake near North Platte. The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department reported that the teen died Tuesday afternoon, when deputies were called to Fire Lake at the Birdwood State Wildlife Management Area just west of North Platte for a report of a possible drowning. Rescue divers who were sent to the area around 4:30 p.m. were able to find the boy’s body shortly after beginning the search, according to the departments Facebook page. Investigators said the boy was one of several teenagers who were fishing and swimming in the lake when others noticed the teen was missing. The victim’s name had not been released by Wednesday morning.

On May 5, 2020 at 4:35 p.m., Deputies received a report of a possible drowning that occurred at Birdwood State Wildlife Management Area (Fire Lake) off Homestead Road. This area is an interstate lake just west of North Platte, NE. Additionally, North Platte Fire and Rescue and the Lincoln County Dive Team responded.

Lincoln County Dive Team members were able to deploy and recover the deceased body of a 16 year old boy. On scene investigation revealed several teenagers were fishing and swimming in the area when the boy went missing. Drugs or alcohol were not a factor and the preliminary cause of death is accidental.
