Northeast to hold classes at West Point and Norfolk Campuses next month

NORFOLK – Northeast Community College in Norfolk will offer a class on Microsoft Office in October.

Microsoft Office Suite – Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook (INFO 5102/19F & CRN #60351) will be held Tuesday and Thursday, October 8 & 10, from 6-9 p.m., in the Lifelong Learning Center.

Whether one is new to Office suite, desire to take their skills to the next level or just need a refresher course for a current or potential job, look no further than this class. Instructor Stacy Anderson will cover the essential skills in the powerhouse trio Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

NORFOLK – Northeast Community College will offer a class in October on the proper care of house plants.

Interior Plant Care (HORT 1991/19F & CRN #60356) will be held Tuesdays, October 8-22, from 6-8 p.m., in the Ag-Allied Health building on Northeast’s Norfolk campus.

This course is designed to teach basics of taking care of interior (house plants). The focus will be how to water, fertilize, divide, and start new plants. Some pest-related topics will also be discussed. This is a great class for beginners or long-time plant owners.

WEST POINT – Tracking one’s family history can be a fascinating journey. A class at Northeast Community College in West Point will provide an understanding of the genealogy research process and ways to interpret information that is discovered.

Genealogy – Climbing Your Family Tree (GENE 5100/19F & & CRN #60103) meets Tuesday, October 8, from 6-9 p.m., in the Donald E. Nielsen Career and Technical Training Center, 200 W. Washington St., Room 102.

With the digitization of historical records, it is now possible to do much of this research from the comfort of anyone’s home. This class will help participants understand the genealogy research process, the way information is interpreted and guide them through the search process for family names using several web sites. They will discover, in simple terms, where to look, whom to contact and how to make one’s family history come alive.

Cost of the class, with Michelle Monson, is $30.

NORFOLK – Northeast Community College in Norfolk will offer another one credit course in electrical licensing in October.

Electrical Licensing I (ELTR 2015/19FS & CRN #14440) will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, October 8-17, from 6:30-10 p.m. in the Applied Technology building, Room 115 A/B.

In this class, Instructor Dan Frohberg will cover a minimum of eight hours on code with the additional eight hours on related topics. These classes, tailored to fit needs and requirements, will also cover the changes in the National Electrical Code and Calculations. They are also used for education hours needed for licensing.

NORFOLK – Northeast Community College in Norfolk will offer a basic life support renewal class for healthcare providers in October.

BLS for Healthcare Provider Renewal (HLTH 5305/19F & CRN #60067) will be held Wednesday, October 9, from 6-10 p.m., in the Arlo Wirth building, Room 101.

This course is designed to refresh the knowledge of a wide variety of healthcare professionals the ability to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner. Participants are asked to bring their certification card with them the night of the class.

Cost of the class, with Bradley Korth the instructor, is $40.

WEST POINT – Northeast Community College in West Point will offer an Intermediate Bridge class in October.

Pam Rief will teach the class (HORC 5135/19F & CRN #60104) on Wednesdays, October 9-30, from 6:30-8:30 p.m., in the Donald E. Nielsen Career and Technical Education Center, 200 W. Washington St., Room 102.

This class is a continuation of a just recently ended Beginning Bridge class, which is a prerequisite to enrolling in this class. Supervised practice hands and new lessons will be offered each week including scoring, bidding and conventions.

Cost of the class is $80.

WEST POINT – A class at the Northeast Community College West Point extended campus will introduce participants to the basics of crochet.

Crochet: Basics and Beyond (HOEC 5135/19F & CRN #60122) will be offered two consecutive Wednesdays, October 9 & 16, in the Donald E. Nielsen Career and Technical Education Center, 200 W. Washington St., Room 104.

In this course, participants will learn the stitches, tools and techniques they need to get started with crochet. They will learn step-by-step instructions for getting started, from selecting the right yarn and deciphering yarn labels to the proper methods for holding hooks and working yarn. Participants will also learn how to complete a basic chain stitch as well as single, double and half-double crochet and the slip stitch. Working in rows, keeping crochet on track and troubleshooting rows gone wrong will also be covered.
