LINCOLN – The Skutt Catholic Skyhawks revenged a loss to York in last year’s state title, beating the Dukes in the first round of the Class B state tournament on Thursday, 78-64.

York got out to a quick start in the first period, grabbing a four point lead and early momentum. However, Skutt would go on an, 8-0 run and eventually grabbed a double digit lead in the tail end of the first quarter. The lead would eventually balloon to 20 points and the Dukes could never overcome it.

Skutt was led by a herculean effort by Tyson Gordon as he finished with 38 points, at times outscoring York as a team. He only converted one three and sunk 17 of 19 attempts at the free throw line, carving up the York defense all day.  While Gordon was dominating, York’s offense struggled, only scoring 13 points in the first period and 11 in the second quarter. The Dukes did get within nine points in the fourth quarter as they outscored the Skyhawks, 26-21, but the comeback effort fell short as three different York seniors fouled out.

York saw three different players score in double figures, led by Brady Danielson’s 19 points. Wyatt Cast and Garrett Snodgrass each scored 11 points. Jeb Lucas finished with eight. Besides Gordon’s 38 points, Jacob Kudron contributed 16 points and Tyler Skradski scored eight.

Skutt will play Lincoln Pius X in the semifinals on Friday. York ends the season at 21-5.
