WAVERLY – It was a tale of two games at the Waverly High School gymnasium Thursday night. In the first game, the Waverly girls defensive pressure was too much for York to handle, as the Vikings defeated the Dukes 46 to 30. It was 11-11 after one quarter, and 20-15 at intermission. But senior-dominated Waverly, forcing multiple York turnovers, held the Dukes to just seven 3rd quarter points while scoring 17 of their own, and went on to win by 16 points. The youthful Duke girls were paced by junior Natalia Dick’s nine points, with sophomore Maddie Portwine adding eight. Eight Vikings scored in the game, led by senior guard Averie Lambrecht’s game high 10 points. The York Girls are now 2-1 on the season.

In the nightcap, the tables were turned, as the Duke boys toppled Waverly 61-36. The game started close, with the Dukes leading 15-7 after one period, and 27-21 at halftime. But York turned up the heat in the 3rd quarter, pouring in 24 points while holding the Vikings to just six, giving the Dukes a 51-27 cushion. Reserves mopped up for most of the 4th quarter, as York cruised to a lopsided win. York was led by three players in double figures – Garrett Snodgrass scored 15, Brady Danielson 14, and Reid Hoffman added 12 points in the victory. York is now 2-0.
Both Duke teams will host Lexington on Saturday at the Duke Dome.
