LINCOLN – The two-seed BDS Eagles (29-4) end their chances at a third straight school title in the Class D1 state tournament, falling to the Archbishop Bergan Knights (26-10) in the semifinals.
Archbishop Bergan controlled BDS for most of the first set. Even though senior Macy Kamler had seven kills in the opening frame, BDS lost the set 25-18. In set two, the Knights got off to a huge lead and took the set 25-23.
BDS fought hard in the third set with Kamler knocking four kills and senior Jordan Bolte adding four kills and the Eagles won set three 25-22.
In the fourth set, Archbishop Bergan started to overwhelm BDS, especially at the net. They took the fourth set 25-14. Senior Lauren Baker finished with 18 kills for Archbishop Bergan. Freshman Paige Frickenstein and sophomore Kaitlyn Mlnarik both had 10. For BDS, Kamler had 15 kills and two aces, sophomore Mariah Sliva had 11 kills and Bolte added 8 kills.
The Knights move on the Class D1 finals for the second time in three years. The three-seed Knights play undefeated one-seed Pleasanton on Saturday.
BDS will still have one more match tomorrow in the third place game against Mead. Seniors Kamler, Bolte and Jess Hudson will have one more game in their successful Eagle volleyball careers. That match begins at 2p.m. at Lincoln Southeast High School.
