Briar Cliff Spikers start season with win over Saint Ambrose

The Briar Cliff women’s volleyball team kicked off the 2019 season with a win Friday night, picking up a 3-1 victory over St. Ambrose at the Nebraska Strong Midland Invite in Fremont, Nebraska.

“Tonight’s win was confidence building,” said first-year head coach Lindsey Weatherford. “We were able to regain our composure after dropping our first set 22-25. We battled back to win the next three straight sets.”

Although the Chargers were able to tie game one at 10-all, they could not overcome eight attack errors and dropped the first set to the Fighting Bees. The Cliff went back and forth with St. Ambrose in the second set before scoring five-straight points to take an 18-12 lead and eventually taking the game 25-17. Briar Cliff won game three 25-18.

It looked as though the Fighting Bees would force a fifth set as St. Ambrose had a 22-18 lead in game four, but the Chargers rattled off seven-straight points to win the set 25-22 and take the match.

“We will have to build on this momentum and continue to work hard and improve our consistency moving forward,” Weatherford added.

Tyra Blue‘s 11 kills and just one error earned the sophomore a swinging percentage of .526, which led all players. Victoria Gonzalez added 10 kills on the night and Grace Hanno and Noel Phillips had seven each. Gonzalez led the Cliff from the serving line with three aces. Delaney Meyer dished out 23 assists and Maureen Imrie had 11.

Cassie Clark led the way defensively with 13 digs. Meyer and Hanno also contributed on the defensive end with 10 digs apiece. Grace Whitlaw had three solo blocks and assisted on two more to add to her six kills.

Abby Happ had 12 kills for St. Ambrose and Amber Tomlin had 34 assists.

The Cliff is now 1-0 on the season and will take on #3 Grand View and #8 Midland tomorrow afternoon in Fremont. The Grand View match is set for 1 p.m. and the Midland contest is at 5:30 p.m.
