CCC Men and Women compete in North Iowa Area Tournament

CCC Men and Women compete in North Iowa Area Tournament

The Central Community College men’s basketball team lost both games at the Thanksgiving Basketball Challenge at North Iowa Area Community College. A recap of both games is below. CCC is now 8-5 on the season and will be back at Raider Fieldhouse on Tuesday night to host McCook Community College. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.

Game 1 vs. Iowa Lakes Community College

The Lakers scored 57 points in both halves of a 114-75 win over the Raiders.

CCC’s Nathan Frost posted his seventh double-double of the season with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Tre’vion Crawford scored 17 points and Wuor Wiyual scored 10 points.

“We didn’t play much defense in the first half and we really let them get going,” said CCC head coach John Ritzdorf. “When we started competing in the second half, they were already in a rhythm. I have to credit them for shooting it well, but shooting 60 percent from the field had a lot to do with our lack of defensive intensity as well.”

Game 2 vs. North Iowa Area Community College

The Raiders and the Trojans met for the second time in nine days and the result was the same. However, the final score was much closer as NIACC defeated CCC, 115-103.

CCC’s Roman BehrensNathan Frost and Tre’vion Crawford accounted for 81 points. Behrens scored a game-high 32 points and dished out 10 assists, while Frost scored 30 points. Crawford rounded out the double-digit scoring with 19 points.

“I am really happy with how we competed against NIACC,” said Ritzdorf. “Obviously, things need to improve on the defensive end of the floor, but I’m pleased with our effort and how hard we played.  NIACC is rated highly for a reason and we showed we can compete with the best teams.”

The Central Community College split a pair of games at the Thanksgiving Basketball Challenge hosted by North Iowa Area Community College. A recap of both games is below. The Raiders are now 5-6 on the season and will host McCook Community College on Tuesday night. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.

Game 1 vs. Iowa Lakes Community College

The Raiders held off the Lakers, 63-56.

Both teams remained close in the first half with ILCC leading 25-24 at halftime. In the second half, CCC kept the Lakers at bay to claim the seven-point win.

Three CCC players scored in double figures with Isabel Diaz leading the way with 14 points. Jasmine Williams and Monica Brooks each recorded double-doubles. Williams scored 13 points and pulled down a dozen rebounds, while Brooks scored 13 points and hauled in 10 boards.

“The team did a good job staying together,” said CCC head coach Billy Perkins. “We limited their second-chance points and played solid defense. I am very proud of the team for coming back from break ready to go.”

Game 2 vs. North Iowa Area Community College

This was the second meeting of the season between the Raiders and the Trojans. Like the first meeting, NIACC was victorious. However, the Raiders held the Trojans to their lowest point total of the season with an 80-60 final score.

CCC was behind 24-11 at the end of the first quarter, before outscoring NIACC 23-17 in the second period to trail 41-34 at the half. The Trojans outscored the Raiders by six and seven points in the third and fourth periods, respectively, to record the win.

Brooks and Diaz led CCC in scoring as each player scored 16 points.

“I am very proud of our effort,” said Perkins. “Playing the #3 team in nation we needed to be solid on the defensive end. We did a great job of slowing them down and not backing down.”
