CCC Men and Women fall to McCook

The Central Community College men’s basketball team lost to McCook Community College, 86-71, at the Raider Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon.

The Indians reeled off an 16-6 run over the first seven minutes of the contest. The Raiders responded by putting together a 13-6 run to make the score 22-19 in favor of MCC with just under 10 minutes to play. McCook then outscored Central 24-8 to take a 46-27 halftime lead.

The Raiders pulled to within seven points twice during the second half. Once at the 8:34 mark (63-56) and the other at the 6:18 mark (70-63). However, the Indians outscored the Raiders 16-9 the rest of the way to post the 86-71 win.

“It’s hard to win when you dig such a big hole early in the game against a good team,” said CCC head coach John Ritzdorf. “We let them get comfortable and didn’t match the effort and intensity needed on the defensive end of the floor. Offensively, we settled for too many three-point shots instead of attacking the basket.”

Dwight Glover led the Raiders with 21 points, while Caleb Muia logged a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Emarr Vinson finished with 15 points and eight rebounds, while Michael Ozomah scored 11 points.

The loss gives the Raiders a season record of 7-9.

Up next, CCC will play at Northeastern (Colo.) Junior College on Thursday at 6 p.m. CST.

The Central Community College women’s basketball team lost to McCook Community College, 61-49, on Saturday at the Raider Fieldhouse.

The Raiders got off to a hot start by outscoring the Indians, 16-4, in the first quarter. Central extended its lead to 23-6 at the 7:30 mark of the second quarter on Bailey Lehr‘s three-point bucket. McCook responded with a 13-5 run to close out the quarter to make the halftime score 28-21 in favor of the Raiders.

The teams remained close to start the second half and CCC led 44-42 at the end of the third period. However, McCook took the lead for good about one minute into the fourth quarter and held the Raiders to five points en route to the 61-49 victory.

While the loss was disappointing, CCC head coach Billy Perkins gave props to his team.

“I am very proud of our team’s effort,” said Perkins. “We played physical and had great effort.”

Lehr led the Raiders in scoring and rebounding with 22 points and eight boards.

The Raiders have lost eight in a row and are now 3-12 on the season.

Central will return to action on Thursday with a road venture to Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colo. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. CST.
