Creighton Men fall to Georgetown

Omaha, Neb. — Playing in the 11th annual Pink Out game, the No. 15 Creighton Men’s Basketball team dropped a 86-79 decision to Georgetown on Wednesday, Feb. 3.

The loss dropped Creighton to 13-5 overall and 9-4 in conference action, while Georgetown moved to 5-8 on the season and 3-5 in BIG EAST play.

The two teams went back-and-forth for eight lead changes in the opening five minutes. Down 10-9 (15:39), the Bluejays claimed a 13-10 edge on two free throws from Christian Bishop and a layup by Damien Jefferson. As the Bluejay senior came down from the layup, however, he went to the floor with a turned ankle and left the floor. Georgetown was able to take advantage with an 11-0 run to seize a 21-13 edge with 11:52 remaining in the opening half.

Down 29-19 (9:44), Jefferson returned from the locker room to spark a Creighton 5-0 surge. Denzel Mahoney delivered all five points, connecting from beyond the arc as well as on a driving layup. The Bluejays closed to within four, 33-29 with 5:51 left, but the Hoyas answered with a 9-2 run to push their lead out to 42-31 and force Creighton head coach Greg McDermott to use a timeout.

The Bluejay leader’s message was received as Creighton came out of the timeout with an 8-0 run, powered by a triple from Ballock, interior buckets by Mahoney and Bishop as well as one from the charity stripe by Bishop. Georgetown closed the half with a short jumper to take a 44-39 lead into the locker room. The Hoyas shot a blistering 16-of-28 (57.1) and knocked down 8-of-13 (61.5) from long range in the opening 20 minutes. Creighton kept pace, hitting 15-of-28 (53.6%) in the first half, including 6-of-12 from beyond the arc.

Creighton’s rally continued at the onset of the second half as Ballock delivered a driving layup, then Marcus Zegarowski connected for a three-pointer to knot the game at 44-44 (17:18). Georgetown answered quickly with a trey from Jahvon Blair. Creighton got within one point twice over the next three minutes, but were never able to claim the lead.

The Hoyas eventually pushed their advantage back out to its high-water mark of 11-points (72-61) with 6:08 remaining and held the Bluejays at bay down the stretch.

Mahoney led four Bluejays in double-figures with 22 points, while Ballock had 16 points. The other two Bluejays to reach double digits were Zegarowski and Bishop with 14 each.

Georgetown got a game-high 22 points from Jahvon Blair, while Chudier Bile delivered 17 points for the Hoyas.

Creighton returns to the floor on Saturday, Feb. 6 as the Bluejays battle Marquette at 4:00 pm (CT)
