NASHVILLE, TENN. – The Creighton softball team split a pair of games during its final day at the Tiger Classic in Nashville. The Bluejays defeated Central Connecticut State, 6-2 before falling to Bowling Green, 7-1.
Creighton moved its season record to 7-5 after finishing the weekend 2-1.
Kiele Miller posted a career-high 14 strikeouts as the Bluejays downed Central Connecticut State, 6-2, during Creighton first game of the day. Miller’s 14 strikeouts were the most by a Creighton pitcher since Micaela Whitney had 15 against Butler during 8 2/3 innings of work on April 24, 2016, and the most in just seven innings of work since Amanda Hess had 15 against Central Arkansas on Feb. 17, 2007.
Mileah McKelvy led the Creighton offense with a pair of doubles and three RBIs. The senior produced a two-RBI double in the fifth and drove in an additional run with her second double during the seventh.
The Bluejays jumped out to a 1-0 edge in the second inning. Victoria Alvarez singled up the middle, stole second, advanced to third on an infield single and scored on a wild pitch.
The Blue Devils threatened in the third inning. CCSU loaded the bases with a pair of singles and a walk, but Miller ended the frame without allowing run with a strikeout looking.
Miller struck out the side in order during the fourth before Creighton added to its advantage in the fifth. Kaitlynn Hunt reached first after a wild pitch on a strike out and Cayla Nielsen tallied a bunt single. After a pitching change, Sam Alm sacrificed both runners into scoring position before McKelvy hit a two-RBI double to right-center field.
Central Connecticut answered in the bottom half of the fifth frame with a pair of runs on a two-RBI double. Miller ended the inning with three consecutive strikeouts to keep the Bluejays ahead by a single run.
After Miller struck out the side again in the sixth, the Bluejays scored three runs on four hits during the top of the seventh. Alm opened the inning with a single through the left side and McKelvy drove in pinch-runner Brittney Manthie for the fourth Creighton run. Kiara Mills and Kailey Wilson combined for back-to-back singles and pinch-runner Courtney Sandell scored to extend the Bluejays’ edge to 5-2. Madeline Vejvoda drove in the final run of the game with an RBI ground out.
Miller improved to 3-3 and moved her season total in strikeouts to 56 in 42 innings of work.
During the second game of the game of the day, the Bluejays fell behind 3-0 after the first three innings against Bowling Green as the Falcons scored twice in the first and once in the third.
Creighton broke into the run column with one in the fourth. McKelvy singled through the right side before Kailey Wilson produced an RBI double to center field to drive in pinch-runner Jacey Sawyer and cut the Bluejays deficit to two runs, 3-1.
Bowling Green added four runs on just two hits in the top of the seventh inning.
The Bluejays lone hits against the Falcons came during the fourth inning, as Creighton managed only four base runners.
Creighton returns to action next weekend at the Coach B Classic in Carbondale, Illinois. The Bluejays are scheduled to play five days in three days, beginning with a matchup against Purdue Fort Wayne on Friday at 10 a.m.
