Creighton Women fall at home to UCONN

Omaha, Neb. — Senior Temi Carda had a season-high 24 points but it wasn’t enough as the Creighton women’s basketball team fell on Thursday, Feb. 25 to top-ranked UConn, 81-49.

The victory clinched the outright BIG EAST regular-season title for UConn (19-1, 16-0 BIG EAST) and was the Huskies 228th straight win over unranked opposition. Creighton dropped to 7-10 overall and is 6-7 in league action.

Creighton took a brief 2-0 lead on a layup from freshman Emma Ronsiek (8:26), but the Huskies responded with a 16-0 run. Freshmen Nika Mühl and Paige Bueckers accounted for all 16 of Connecticut’s points on the run, connecting on four trey and a pair of layups. Down 16-2 (5:22), the Bluejays battled the top-ranked team evenly over the final five minutes of the first quarter to trail 27-13 after one period.

Carda delivered all of Creighton’s eight points in the second quarter, highlighted by a three-ball in the closing seconds as the Bluejays trailed 42-21 at the half.

Although the Bluejays posted some highlights in the second half, Creighton was simply unable to hang with the Huskies.

Carda drained 11-of-19 shot attempts and also led the Bluejays with eight rebounds to lead Creighton, Four Huskies posted double figures, including a team-high 19 points for Mühl. Christyn Williams closed the game with 16 points, while Bueckers delivered 13 points and nine assists. The final Connecticut player in double figures was Olivia Nelson-Ododa with 11 points.

The Bluejays return to the court on Saturday, Feb. 27 as Creighton hosts St. John’s at 1:00 pm
