Creighton Women fall to Arizona State

Tempe, Ariz. — Despite a career-high 24 point effort from senior Olivia Elger, the Creighton women’s basketball team suffered a 70-55 loss to Arizona State on Friday, Dec. 20th.

The loss ended the Bluejays non-conference season with an 8-3 mark, while Arizona State moved to 10-2 overall.

Creighton’s offense struggled through the opening seven minutes as the Bluejays found themselves down 9-2 with 3:06 left in the quarter. Consecutive layups from freshman Carly Bachelor and senior Jaylyn Agnew got the Creighton offense going, but Arizona State held a 15-8 lead after the opening quarter.

Early in the second period Arizona State pushed its advantage to 14 (22-8), but a trey by sophomore Gracey Griglione helped the Bluejays find their outside game. Trailing 28-16 with 4:51 remaining, Creighton connected on three-pointers from Agnew and Elger to get the Bluejays within striking distance at 28-22 (1:09). A bucket in the closing seconds from the Sun Devils sent the squads to halftime with Arizona State holding a 30-22 edge.

The Sun Devils asserted themselves early in the third quarter, pushing their edge to 15 at 44-29 (6:12) and held a 55-38 lead heading to the final quarter.

While the Bluejays refused to fade in the fourth quarter, outscoring Arizona State 17-15 in the frame, Creighton could not get closer than 11 points at 61-50 (6:18).

Elger led all scorers with 24 points, while Agnew delivered 12 points. Arizona State got 12 points from Robbi Ryan and both Jayde Van Hyfte as well as Jamie Ruden finished with 11 points.

Creighton returns to the hardwood on Sunday, Dec. 29th as the Bluejays open BIG EAST play at Georgetown with a 1:00 pm (CT) tip time.
