Creighton Women lose to St. John’s in Big East Tournament

Chicago, Ill. — The Creighton women’s basketball team suffered a 70-54 loss to St. John’s in the BIG EAST Tournament Quarterfinals on Saturday, March 7th.

The loss moved the Bluejays to 19-11 on the season, while St. John’s moved to 19-11.

The game got off to an excellent start as the Bluejays closed the opening quarter with an 18-2 run to hold a 20-5 lead at the end of the opening frame. Creighton went 9-of-14 in the first quarter (64.3%), getting five points in the period from junior Temi Carda and four from senior Jaylyn Agnew.

St. John’s, however, made the necessary adjustments in the second quarter to send the game to halftime knotted at 30-30. Part of the problem in the second ten minute frame was foul trouble, Creighton was called for three fouls in the first five minutes and sent Red Storm guard Alisha Kebbe to the charity stripe four times in the second quarter.

Foul trouble continued to be an issue for the Bluejays in the third as Creighton put St. John’s in the bonus with six minutes remaining. The turning point in the game came with the Bluejays down 38-36 with 6:43 remaining in the third quarter. The Red Storm used a 9-0 run to push its advantage to 47-36 with 2:45 left in the period.

Down nine early in the fourth, Creighton tried to rally late as junior Tatum Rembao knocked down a pair of free throws and senior Olivia Elger delivered a driving layup to bring the Bluejays within striking distance at 53-48 (8:33). St. John’s responded with an 8-0 run to put the game away.

Agnew led Creighton with 21 points in the loss, while St. John’s got a game-high 24 points from Lelani Correra.

Creighton will now await a postseason big on Monday, March 16th. The Bluejays’ season will continue either in the NCAA Tournament or in the WNIT.
