GACC Goes 2-0 at First Day of State Softball

HASTINGS – Avery Kreikemeier hit three home runs over two games, and Guardian Angels Central Catholic went 2-0 at the first day of the Class C State Softball Tournament in Hasting on Wednesday.

In the first game, Auburn took a 4-0 lead after the top of the first, before the Bluejays took a 7-4 lead in the bottom half of the inning.

GACC made a pitching change from Brooke Meister to Erin Franzluebbers in the first inning, and Franzluebbers wouldn’t allow a run for three straight innings.

The Bluejays took a 13-4 lead after three innings, thanks in part to a pair of home runs from Avery Kreikemeier, and three hits including a double along with four RBIs from Marissa Hunke.

Auburn added three runs in the top of the fifth to make it 13-7 GACC.

The Bluejays scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth, ending the game at 15-7 due to the eight-run mercy run.

The bats were hot again in game two for GACC, as they jumped to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first, with Jenna Schinstock hitting a two-run home run, followed by a solo shot from Avery Kreikmeier.

GACC added a run in the second, three in the third, including a home run from Aubrey Kreikemeier, and three runs in the fourth, ending the game 10-0 due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Franzluebbers was the starting pitcher and allowed just one hit while recording six strike outs.

With the two wins on Wednesday, GACC is now 27-3 on the season, and will meet #1 seeded Fairbury in the winner’s bracket semifinals Thursday afternoon at 4:30.

The game will be broadcast on 107.9 The Bull.
