The Gering Bulldogs on Tuesday night emerged as the Class B-10 Softball Subdistrict champions after a 9-6 win over Scottsbluff in the title game.

The day started with Scottsbluff edging Alliance 7-5 to set up the rivalry matchup for the title. Scottsbluff would have needed two wins over Gering to win the tournament but Gering would not allow that second game to be played.

Scottsbluff got their first run in the top of the second inning on a passed ball.

It was still 4-1 Gering into the top of the fifth inning when the Bearcats got a little bit closer. Mariyah Avila got the rally started with a triple and eventually scored on a wild pitch and then with Taylor Klein aboard it was Brady Laucomer with drilling a RBI double to make it 4-3, but Laucomer was thrown out at third base trying to stretch it to a triple.

Then in the bottom of the fifth inning it was Gering answering right back with four runs. Calista Muhr led off the inning with a solo homer to left center field to make it 5-3. After the other three runs scored it was 8-3 Bulldogs.

Scottsbluff would not go quietly into the night as Kymber Shallenberger launched a three run homer in the top of the sixth inning to make it interesting at 8-6 before Muhr scored an insurance run for Gering after being hit by a pitch in the bottom half of the inning.

Maddie Wiese worked around a one out single by Laucomer in the top of the seventh to finish off the complete game and give Gering the championship.

Earlier in the day in the win for Scottsbluff you had Laucomer set the single season home run record for Scottsbluff with nine and also Taylor Klein became the new career RBI leader in program history.

Scottsbluff’s season comes to a close at 10-21.

Gering is now 19-10 and they’ll advance to play in a district final game this Friday. The opponent right now is still to be determined.
