Iowa State Volleyball drops match at Baylor

WACO, Texas – Iowa State (14-8, 5-5 Big 12) struggled to find answers on defense as it fell to No. 3 Baylor (19-1, 9-1 Big 12) 3-0 (25-15, 29-27, 25-18) Sunday afternoon at the Ferrell Center.

The Bears were able to fire their way to .379 hitting, the highest hitting percentage the Cyclones have conceded this season. In defeat, Iowa State was led by Eleanor Holthaus notched 16 kills at .294 hitting.

Set One: Baylor 25 Iowa State 15
A good start for Iowa State was off-set by a 7-0 run on the serve of Shanel Bramschreiber that helped put the Bears ahead 14-7. There was no path back into the set for the Cyclones, who were restricted to .156 hitting for the set, while BU powered its way to .400 hitting in the set, while also being aided by Bramschreiber’s two aces in the big run. Baylor moved ahead 1-0 when Candelaria Herrera fired wide at 25-15.

Set Two: Baylor 29 Iowa State 27
Once again, a solid start to the set was negated by Bramschreiber’s trip behind the service line as she served up a 3-0 run which included an ace to get the Bears ahead 8-6. Another 3-0 run, this one served up by Mariek Van der Mark, helped give BU some breathing room at 12-8. Michal Schuler ripped an ace as part of a 3-0 run to get ISU back within one, but the Cyclones struggled to make the next step. Kate Shannon’s cameo behind the service line finally tied things up with an ace at 19-19, but again ISU could not make the next step in the set. The Cyclones fought off four set points to get to 25-25 and finally got a set point when Holthaus wrapped up a one-minute rally with a kill. However, ISU was unable to convert and despite surviving another set point, the Bears eventually wrapped the set up when Annie Hatch hit the antenna at 29-27.

Set Three: Baylor 25 Iowa State 18
An even start to the third set was broken open by Yossiana Pressley, as BU’s superstar and All-American racked up three-straight kills to move the home team ahead 12-10. Iowa State hung tough and cut the Baylor advantage to one on multiple occasions but again struggled to get the scores level. The Bears were eventually able to take advantage of some ISU errors to go on a 4-0 run to get some breathing room and ahead for good at 21-16. Baylor wrapped up the match when Nicole Thomas killed at 25-18.
