Iowa State Volleyball drops regular season finale to Texas

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (17-11, 8-8 Big 12) gave No. 4 Texas (21-3, 15-1 Big 12) its best shot, but was unable to pull off the upset as the Longhorns won 3-1 (23-25, 25-9, 25-19, 25-22) Saturday afternoon at Hilton Coliseum.

The Cyclones were able to work their way to a first-set win, but the Longhorns were able to clean up mistakes and errors to get back ahead and claim the match. In defeat, Michal Schuler had another outstanding match in place of the injured Eleanor Holthaus, recording 15 kills. Annie Hatch had 10, while Josie Herbst celebrated her Senior Day with eight kills.

Set One: Iowa State 25 Texas 23
Texas took an early edge in the set, but it was the serving cameo of Annie Hatch that did damage, as she put together a 4-0 run on her serve to push the Cyclones ahead 14-12. ISU was able to stay ahead thanks to the struggles of the UT serve. Despite hitting .278 in the first, the visitors were hindered by five service errors. Candelaria Herrera and Piper Mauck teamed for a block which made it 23-20, but UT rallied to back within one at 23-22. ISU got to set point at 24-22 on a Herrera kill, and put it away when Brionne Butler was called for a blocking error at 25-23.

Set Two: Texas 25 Iowa State 9
Texas’ defense stepped up to start the second, using three blocks in its first seven points to move out to a 7-3 lead. Those blocks were part of a 12-0 run which helped move the Longhorns ahead 15-3. There was no path back into the set for Iowa State, who was held to -.176 hitting in the set, with UT recording 7.5 total blocks in the frame. The Longhorns wrapped it up when Butler and Skylar Fields combined to deny Avery Rhodes at 25-9, UT.

Set Three: Texas 25 Iowa State 19
An even set was broken open once again by the Texas block, as a pair of UT stuffs helped spark a 5-0 run which put the visitors ahead 13-9. ISU did not go away quietly, using some strong defense on a 3-0 run to pull back within a pair at 16-14 on a Josie Herbst kill. The Longhorns were able to regain composure and pull away from there, using a late 4-1 run to get some breathing room. Texas moved ahead 2-1 when Schuler’s serve went into the net at 25-19.

Set Four: Texas 25 Iowa State 22
Michal Schuler made some big plays on both sides of the 10-foot line to help send the Cyclones on a 4-0 run to move ahead 11-7. Iowa State did well to battle and stay ahead in the set, but UT was eventually able to knot it back up at 17-17 on an Asjia O’Neal kill, and move ahead at 20-19 on a Micaya White ace. UT was able to take care of business from there, with Butler getting the final kill at 25-22.
