Iowa State Volleyball sweeps Horned Frogs

FORT WORTH, Texas – Iowa State (14-7, 5-4 Big 12) used a very strong defensive performance to sweep TCU (7-12, 2-7 Big 12) 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-23) Wednesday night at the University Recreation Center.

The Cyclones held TCU to .108 hitting on the night via 11.0 total blocks and out-digging the Frogs 51-to-42. Candelaria Herrera notched nine blocks, while Piper Mauck was in on five. Izzy Enna guided the back-row with 13 digs.

Eleanor Holthaus led the attack with 11 kills, while Annie Hatch had 10 and Herrera got eight at .412 hitting.

Set One: Iowa State 25 TCU 15
Iowa State’s block set the tone early, helping earn the first three points of the match. The Frogs worked their way back to tie it at 10-10 on a block of their own but the Cyclones were able to get back ahead via dominance in the front row. The Cyclone block continued to suffocate the TCU offense, notching 5.0 total blocks in the opening set. As for the Iowa State hitters, Candelaria Herrera powered the ISU attack with six kills at .667 hitting for the set. Iowa State wrapped up the first when Eleanor Holthaus killed at 25-15.

Set Two: Iowa State 25 TCU 22
Once again, Iowa State took control early by claiming the first three points of the set. TCU was able to and get ahead for the first time all night at 7-6 on a Holthaus attack error. The Frogs were able to sustain the momentum and build up an advantage of four at 10-6 before ISU was able to side-out. The home side’s lead got up to five at 13-8 before the Cyclones were able to get back to work to tie it at 16-16 with a Herrera block. Iowa State moved ahead again at 18-17 on a Brooke Andersen kill. The sophomore’s cameo off the bench proved crucial, as Andersen notched four kills and an ace in the set. Andersen buried a TCU overpass to wrap up the second 25-22.

Set Three: Iowa State 25 TCU 23
Andersen continued to have her impact on the match, as her 4-0 serving run helped the Cyclones move ahead 12-7. The Cyclone defense continued to hinder the TCU attack, with Herrera and Piper Mauck leading a defense which had 3.0 total blocks in the third. Mauck’s solo stuff of Afedo Manyang made it 18-10 Iowa State, but the Frogs were able to rally back within one at 20-19. However, ISU was able to regain composure and close out the match, with Herrera getting her eighth kill of the night to close things out at 25-23.

Candelaria Herrera. TCU had no answer to the Argentine at the net and on both sides of the ball. The junior finished with eight kills at .412 hitting and also contributed nine blocks (one solo, eight assists) in the winning effort.

Iowa State is back on the road this weekend with a Sunday afternoon match at No. 3 Baylor. First serve between the Cyclones and the Bears will be at 4 p.m. with ESPNU televising the match.
