AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State women’s basketball team (9-4, 1-1 Big 12) fought hard to erase a double-digit second-half deficit against No. 25 Texas (9-5, 1-1 Big 12), but ultimately came up short, 81-75.
How It Happened
The Cyclones opened the contest on an 11-0 run, which was punctuated with a Scott three ball. ISU picked up right where it left off against Texas Tech, shooting at a 66% clip from the field in the first (8-13) and 60% from behind the arc (3-5). Despite shooting just 6-18 from the field in the first quarter, the Longhorns were hot from deep, connecting on 3-4 attempts from downtown in the first quarter. At the first intermission, Iowa State led Texas, 19-16.
The Iowa State offense slowed in the second quarter. The Cyclones shot just 5-17 from the field and only hit 1-7 threes in the second quarter and finished the half on a 2:45 scoring drought. At the half, the Cyclones trailed the Longhorns 37-31.
Out of the break, Iowa State cut the Texas lead to 43-39 behind two Maggie Espenmiller-McGraw threes. Texas answered back and sprung a 12-0 run to jump back out to a 55-39 lead. Heading to the fourth quarter, the Longhorns held a 64-48 advantage over Iowa State.
Midway through the fourth quarter, Iowa State went on a 7-0 run, cutting the lead to 69-59, forcing a Texas timeout. Down the stretch, ISU would cut the UT lead to as few as six, but Texas would hold on to claim a 81-75 victory.
Players Of Note
Kristin Scott collected her first double-double of the season and the seventh of her career. She poured in a team-high 24 points on 9-15 shooting while pulling down 14 boards, which ties for her career high. She added two assists and two blocks to her stat line, as well.
Ashley Joens continued to fill up the stat sheet. Her 18 points and 10 rebounds accounted for her seventh double-double of the season. Joens was a perfect 5-5 from the charity stripe and also dished out two assists in the contest.
Iowa State hits the road this weekend to face Oklahoma on Saturday, Jan. 11. That game between the Cyclones and the Sooners will tip at 1 p.m. and will be available through Fox Sports Oklahoma.
