ATLANTA – Iowa State women’s basketball sophomore Ashley Joens was named to the Cheryl Miller Award Top 5, the WBCA announced today. The Cheryl Miller Award honors the nation’s top small forward.
The Iowa City, Iowa native, has turned heads so far into her sophomore campaign, and is currently first in the Big 12 in scoring and 11th in the nation, averaging 20.5 points per game, while her 10.5 rebounds ranks third in the Big 12 and 13th nationally, the most of any guard in the league. Joens remains the only player in the NCAA averaging over 20.0 points, 10.0 rebounds. Joens is also the only player in the Big 12 ranking in the top-5 in points and rebounds for the season.
Recently she was named one of three unanimous selections to the All-Big 12 First-Team. Joens is currently averaging a double-double with 20.5 points and 10.5 rebounds and has claimed a league-high six Big 12 weekly honors
Joens recently notched her 1,000th career point as Iowa State topped No. 2 Baylor, ending the Lady Bears’ 58-game win streak in Big 12 play. Joens netted the final three points as Iowa State topped Baylor, 57-56. Joens has 594 points on the year, which ranks fifth on ISU’s single-season charts.
Joens joins Megan Walker (Connecticut), Rhyne Howard (Kentucky), Satou Sabally (Oregon) and Michaela Onyenwere (UCLA) as finalists.
Last season, Iowa State’s own Bridget Carleton was honored as the Cheryl Miller Award winner. Carleton was just the second-ever winner of the award and the first for Iowa State.
The winner of the 2020 Cheryl Miller Small Forward Award will be presented at The College Basketball Awards presented by Wendy’s in Los Angeles, CA on Friday, April 10, 2020, along with the other four members of the Women’s Starting Five
