Joens Named To Cheryl Miller Award Watch List

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Iowa State women’s basketball sophomore guard Ashley Joens is a candidate for the Cheryl Miller Award, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association announced Wednesday.

Joens was named to the preseason watch list of 20 women’s basketball student-athletes.

Last season, Joens averaged 11.7 points, 5.0 rebounds and knocked down a team-high 72 triples. Joens was Iowa State’s third-leading scorer in 2018-19, helping Iowa State one of its most successful seasons in program history with a second-place finish in the Big 12 and a 26-9 overall record.

Joens also spent the offseason with USA Basketball, capturing her second-straight gold medal with Team USA at the U19 Women’s World Cup.

To start the 2019-20 season, Joens was named honorable mention All-Big 12 and was named to the Big 12’s All-Freshman team.

Joens is the second Iowa State women’s basketball player to appear on the Cheryl Miller Watch List, as Bridget Carleton was named to the Watch List the first two years of the award. Carleton was named the 2019 Cheryl Miller Award winner, becoming the first Cyclone to win a WBCA Position Award and be named to the Naismith Starting Five.

New to the award this season is Fan Voting presented by Dell Technologies in each of the three rounds. By mid-February, the watch list of 20 players for the 2020 Cheryl Miller Award will be narrowed to just 10. In March, five finalists will be presented to Ms. Miller and the Hall of Fame’s selection committee.
