OSCEOLA-In girls’ basketball action at Osceola High School Thursday evening, the McCool Junction Mustangs (10-4) started off fast, scoring 17 points in the first quarter to defeat the Osceola Bulldogs (6-8) 47-36. The Mustangs, led in scoring by freshman McKenna Yates with 15 points, started off fast outscoring the Bulldogs 17-7 in the first frame. The rest of the game was a back and forth affair with the Mustangs stretching the lead by one, going into the half up 24-13. The second half ended up being extremely competitive, even as the Bulldogs led in scoring by junior Sadie Sunday with 11, managed to keep up with the Mustangs scoring 14 in the third and nine in the fourth to keep the difference at 11 which ended up being the margin of victory.
The nightcap featured two extremely talented teams as the now 10-3 McCool Junction Mustangs defeated the Class D-2 9th ranked and now 11-3 Osceola Bulldogs 58-47. The game started off fast with the two teams combining for 28 points in the first quarter with Osceola, led in scoring by sophomore Isaiah Zelasney, who finished with a career high 29 points, scoring 14. The second quarter was a mirror image with the total points being the same but with McCool Junction, led in scoring by senior Tyler Neville with 23, scoring 14 to take the game into half tied at 26. The third quarter saw Osceola outscoring the Mustangs of McCool Junction 13-9, setting the stage for the fourth quarter. The fourth quarter saw an explosion of offense from Owen McDonald who finished with 11 points and the Mustangs, scoring 23 points compared to eight from Osceola.
