Midland women drop season opener at Kansas Wesleyan

SALINA, Kan. – Midland University opened their 2019-20 women’s basketball season on the road on Saturday evening at Kansas Wesleyan University and came up just short, falling 57-49. The Warriors and Coyotes struggled offensively, shooting less than 40% from the field in the first game for both teams. Midland shot just 25% from the field while KWU shot 36.7%.

Kansas Wesleyan held a slim three point lead after one quarter of play and extended it to five points at the break. The Warriors led briefly in the first but the Coyotes seized the lead back with just before the end of the first and then led the rest of the way.

In the second half the margin stretched to 16 points but the Warriors would battle back to keep things interesting.

The Warriors were led by senior Amanda Hansen with 11 points off of 5-14 shooting. Sam Shepard was next highest with eight points off of the bench.

Senior Makenna Sullivan pulled down 11 rebounds to pace the Warriors and also added a team-high 6 steals.

Midland (0-1) will be back in action on October 31 and November 1 as they play in the BU/NCC Classic. They’ll host Nebraska Christian inside Wikert Event Center at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday and they travel to take on Bellevue University on Friday at 3:00 p.m.
