Morningside Men and Women rout Doane

Morningside Men and Women rout Doane

A busy set of three Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheaders in six days resumes Saturday, Nov. 23.

Hastings College pays a visit to Allee Gymnasium and the Rosen-Verdoorn Sports Center for a 4 p.m. women’s and 6 p.m. men’s Great Plains Athletic Conference meeting.

Live audio, statistics, and video are available for both games across www.msidemustangs.com, the Internet home of Morningside College athletics. The Mustangs have been on fire of late in men’s and women’s play. Head coach Jim Sykes‘ men are 6-0 overall and 2-0 in league action and are one of only two remaining overall and loop unbeatens along with Dakota Wesleyan University. Head coach Jamie Sale‘s women’s squad is off to a 6-1 overall and 3-0 conference opening, which has them tied with Concordia University for first, part of four programs that are undefeated in conference action.

Mustang Marks: Women – The Maroon registered their most significant margin of victory since November 2017 when they overwhelmed Doane University 99-45 Nov. 20. Mside’s defense was again the key, aiding 35 Tiger turnovers, which led to 40 points, as they turned in their stingiest performance since holding International American – San German to 41 in December 2016 … Sale’s crew jumped out to a 31-6 lead after one quarter and didn’t look back. Junior guard Sierra Mitchell (JR/Pleasant Hill, IA) (Pleasant Hill, Iowa) reeled off her fourth straight double-figure scoring contest with 17 points due to a solid five-of-nine effort from beyond the arc, while sophomore guard Taylor Rodenburgh (SO/Hawarden, IA) (Hawarden, Iowa) continued to impress with 11 points, six assists and two steals coming off the bench, and junior guard Faith Meyer (JR/Pomeroy, IA ) (Pomeroy, Iowa) tallied 11 points, two steals and a pair of assists also in a substitution role as the Morningside bench compiled 59 points to DU’s 10 … Senior forward/center Sydney Hupp (SR/O’Neill, NE) (O’Neill, Neb.) and Mitchell hold down high rent residences on the conference numbers early on. Hupp is first in rebounding (9.71 per game), tied for second in blocks per outing (1.43), and ranks fourth in scoring (17.14 ppg). Mitchell stands third in scoring (18.14 ppg).

Men – Morningside limited Doane to less than 20 percent shooting overall and from three-point range in the first 20 minutes to open up a 37-13 halftime lead midweek. They outrebounded their hosts 43-28 and wound hitting at a healthy 45.3 percent clip from the field as part of a 69-32 victory … The senior combination of forward Matt Hahn (SR/Fremont, NE ) (Fremont, Neb.) and center Tyler Borchers (SR/Le Mars, IA ) (LeMars, Iowa) lifted the Mustangs points-wise. Hahn drained four three-point baskets as part of a 12-point night, and Borchers was four-for-six from the field and a perfect two-for-two at the free-throw line en route to a 10-point outing. Borchers narrowly missed a double-double, adding eight rebounds to his stat line. Senior guard Alex Borchers (SR/South Sioux City, NE ) (South Sioux City, Iowa) (nine points) and junior guard Zach Imig (JR/Gretna, NE ) (Gretna, Neb.) (eight points) attached to a balanced attack … Borchers, through six games, tops the conference in field goal percentage (61.5). He’s not the only Mside player with high rankings, as Imig is tied for third in field goal accuracy (57.4 percent), is tied for fourth with Hahn in steals per contest (1.67), and is second in assists per outing (4.17). Hahn is one spot below him assists-wise (4 pg).

Pre-Thanksgiving Date: Concordia University takes on the Mustangs in Sioux City Tuesday, Nov. 26. Game times are 6 p.m. for the women and 8 p.m. for the men inside Allee Gymnasium and the Rosen-Verdoorn Sports Center.
