Seward and Wahoo Senior Legion Squads Split Doubleheader

July 4th, 2020 | Amanda Mendoza

SEWARD-Seward and Wahoo senior legion squads split a doubleheader Thursday night with Seward winning game one 7-4 and the Wahoo taking game two 5-3.

Wahoo game one starter Tate Nelson was cruising through the first three innings allowing one hit and one walk. While Seward starter Theo Hughes got into a couple of jams but pitched around them to earn the win.

In the fourth inning, things started to unravel for Wahoo as Nelson got into trouble on a two-out rally by Seward.

After Nelson got the first two batters out Hunter Novacek drew a walk. The next four batters for Seward got hit including a two-run double by Malachi Lyon. The Legion Jays scored six runs in the inning with two outs, sending eight batters to the plate. That made the score 6-2.

Wahoo didn’t back down adding two runs in the top of the seventh off Seward reliever Jacob Groff. Groff held them off and Seward won the game 7-4.

Hughes allowed two runs on five hits while fanning seven Reds in the win. Wahoo hitter Karson Hesser went 3-4 in the loss, including two doubles.

Game two had a much different feel. Three Wahoo hitters had double-digit hits in the game, Aaron Ickler, Brody Specht, and Jake Whitney. Seward didn’t have any batters with more than one hit, however, Trevor Ruth reached base three times on two walks and a single. Jays starter Tatye Rolenc surrendered two runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out five.

After Wahoo scratched Ikler to start at the last minute, Karson Hessler was given the nod. He was impressive going the distance, seven innings allowing only three runs on four hits and fanning four. He did however walk five Seward batters in the 5-3 win.

Seward is off until Tuesday when they play a doubleheader at Bennington.
