Stranded Runners, Errors Doom GACC in State Softball Semis

HASTINGS – The Guardian Angels Central Catholic softball team lost 8-4 to Fairbury in the winner’s bracket semifinals of the Class C State Tournament in Hastings on Thursday.

The game was tied 1-1 after the first inning.

The Bluejays took a 3-1 lead in the third thanks to an RBI triple by Kate Gnad and an RBI single by Marissa Hunke.

A pair of defensive errors by GACC resulted in four runs by Fairbury in the fourth, and the Jeffs took a 5-3 lead.

Fairbury added three more runs in the sixth, and led 8-3 heading into the final inning.

GACC was able to score one last time in the bottom of the seventh, making the final score Fairbury 8, GACC 4.

The Bluejays totaled nine hits in the game, but stranded eight base runners. Jenna Schinstock had three singles and an RBI for GACC, with Gnad recording a triple, single and an RBI, and Hunke had a pair of singles with an RBI.

Despite taking the loss pitching, Erin Franzluebbers struck out 11 batters in the game.

GACC is now 27-4 on the season and will meet Auburn Friday morning at 11:30 in the elimination semifinals. The winner of that game advances to play Fairbury in the state championship at 2:00

All remaining GACC games will be broadcast on 107.9 The Bull.
