Sutton Shuts Out GICC in Season Opener

August 28th, 2020 | Beth Rogers

SUTTON – Cade Wiseman tallied 228 yards on the ground and two touchdowns to lead his Sutton Mustangs (1-0) to a shutout 22-0 win over the Grand Island Central Catholic Crusaders (0-1) Friday.

Wiseman, aided by Suttons strong offensive line, used his athletic prowess to bolt past Crusader defenders for most of the contest. His first touchdown – a 40 yard run – came early in the fourth quarter to put his team up two scores, and then pounded one in late from seven yards out.

Sutton scored midway through the first quarter with a three-yard touchdown run by junior running back Paxton Olsen. He added 83 yards on the ground for the Mustangs, and converted a two-point conversion. Senior tight end Tyler Baldwin also caught a two-point conversion pass from senior wide receiver Quenton Jones.

The second and third quarters were scoreless for both sides. With Sutton standing ahead by one score in the fourth quarter, senior Crusader quarterback Russ Martinez drove his team down the field to the one-yard line, only to be stopped by Suttons dominant defensive line at the goal-line.

Offensive leaders for the Crusaders included Martinez who ran for 101 yards and finished 5-for-15 passing for 49 yards. Junior running back Brayton Johnson had 24 yards rushing.

Next week, the Mustangs take on Wilber-Clatonia at home, while GICC travels to Archbishop Bergan.
