Three Morningside Football players earn All-American Honors

For the 15th successive season, Morningside College was represented on the American Football Coaches Association/National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ All-American teams.

The 2019 squads were released Thursday, Dec. 5.

Senior linebacker Joel Katzer (Baldwin City, Kansas) highlighted a trio of Mustangs on the top two units, as he was tabbed a first-team honoree. Katzer, also a three-time first-team all-Great Plains Athletic Conference pick, is seventh in career tackles (305) and ranks second on the 2019 squad in tackles (81) and interceptions (two). His first team award marks the sixth straight year in which at least Maroon athlete has been so recognized.

Head coach Steve Ryan‘s program, which has had 24 individuals awarded all-time, also had senior offensive lineman Garrett Temme (Petersburg, Neb.) and senior defensive back Klayton Nordeen (Alliance, Neb.) earn second-team accolades. Temme, also a three-time first-team all-conference awardee, has led one of the nation’s top offensive fronts, as Mside has surrendered only three sacks in 12 games while averaging better than 56 points and almost 580 yards a contest. Nordeen, a two-time first-team all-GPAC selection, is the defensive unit’s leader in interceptions (five) while ranking third in tackles (65).

Adding to the Maroon successes was the trio of junior running back Arnijae “AP” Ponder (Griffin, Ga.), senior defensive lineman Alex Paulson (Buffalo Center, Iowa) and senior return specialist Bo Els (Erie. Colo.) were tabbed as honorable mention selections.
