PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The Omaha baseball program dropped a 3-1 result to Indiana State on the opening day of the Snowbird Classic Thursday afternoon.

The Mavericks fall to 2-2 overall while the Sycamores gain their first win of the 2020 campaign (1-3).

On the mound, Easton Smith made his first-career start and fell to 1-1 after the Sycamores plated two runs in the fifth. Smith finished the day with 6.0 innings pitched, two strikeouts, four walks, three hits and two runs allowed. Cam Fowler tossed 2.0 innings in relief with one hit, one run and two walks allowed.

Indiana State’s Collin Liberatore (1-1) earned the win with one hit allowed through 6.0 shutout innings. Tyler Grauer recorded the save. The Sycamores had four hits among four different players.

Keil Krumwiede notched a team-best two hits (2-for-4), while Parker Smejkal recorded a ninth-inning home run (1-for-3). Harrison Denk (1-for-4) and Grant Goldston (1-for-4) also registered hits.

In the bottom of the first, Indiana State threatened with the bases loaded. Smith, however, was able to help get his team out of the jam with a ground out, a fly out and a ground out at third. Both teams were scoreless until the fifth inning, which Indiana State notched back-to-back sacrifice flies to go up 2-0 in the game.

It wouldn’t be until the top of the eighth when ISU went up 3-0 on a sacrifice bunt with runners on first and third. Despite being down, Omaha was not out as Smejkal blasted a home run over left center in the top of the ninth. With two outs, Krumwiede singled for his second hit of the day. Goldston then came up to the plate and advanced Krumwiede to third on a single. Indiana State, however, was able to hold on for the win.

Omaha takes on Chicago State tomorrow at 10 a.m. (CST) in Florida to continue action in the Snowbird Classic.
