OMAHA, Neb. – Head coach Evan Porter announced today the addition of 11 student-athletes this fall to National Letters of Intent for the 2021 season.
“We are thrilled to have this group represent our ‘stadium opening’ recruiting class,” said Porter. “The success our team had last season allowed us to recruit and sign these incredibly talented players.”
Mike Boeve | INF/3B | Hastings, Neb. | 6-2 | 210 | L/R
Mike Boeve joins the Mavericks as the top-ranked third baseman in the state of Nebraska and ranked No. 12 overall in the state per Prep Baseball Report (PBR). From Hastings Senior High School, Boeve is a two-time Class B First Team All-State honoree. He helped his team to a runner-up finish as a junior with a 21-8 overall record and a third place finish at 18-7 the year before. Boeve is also a multi-time letterwinner in basketball for the Tigers.
“Mike is one of the better high school hitters we’ve seen,” said Porter. “His work ethic and character will take him to another level once he gets to college and we are thrilled to have him join our baseball family.”
Ryan Doran | UTIL/1B | Harlan, Iowa | 6-3 | 230 | L/R
Doran comes from Iowa Central CC where he was most recently named to the NJCAA All-Academic Second Team. Previously, he prepped at Harlan High School where he led his team in batting average (.457), on-base percentage (.580), slugging percentage (.904), hits (43), doubles (18), home runs (8), RBI (35), runs scored (41) and walks (23). He also tied for third in the state in doubles and sixth I home runs.
“Ryan is one of the most advanced hitters we’ve seen at the JUCO level,” said Porter. “He can hit for power and average and is a plus defender at first base. We are thrilled to have Ryan join our baseball family.”
Tyson Gerdes | OF | Omaha, Neb. | 5-11 | 170 | R/R
Gerdes joins the Maverick family as the third-ranked outfielder in the state and 17th overall via Prep Baseball Report. A local from Millard South High School, Gerdes is coming off a junior season where he was an All-Nebraska Lincoln Journal Star All-Super State honoree and Omaha World Herald All-State Metro and First Team All-Metro by the World Herald and Lincoln Journal Star. He recently helped lead his team to a runner-up finish in the state tournament.
“Tyson is an ultra-competitive player and has been a phenomenal leadoff man for Coach Geary’s Patriots,” said Porter. “He sets the tone each game with passion and energy and is one of the better base-runners we’ve seen at the high school level. He is a great addition to our Maverick family.”
Truitt Luth | RHP | Omaha, Neb. | 6-4 | 205 | R/R
Luth comes to Omaha as the No. 4 ranked pitcher in the state and 13th overall on PBR. The Elkhorn South High School product is a four-year letterwinner for the Storm under head coach Brandon Dahl where he helped lead his team to a state championship as a sophomore. Last year, his team finished fourth at state.
“Truitt can throw three pitches for a strike in any count and has great pitch-ability,” said Porter. “He was a huge part of Coach Dahl’s successful Storm team last season. He commands a great presence on the mound and he will be a tremendous addition to our pitching staff and baseball family.”
Jayden Maifeld | RHP | Ankeny, Iowa | 6-0 | 210 | R/R
A product of Iowa Central CC, Maifeld was named Honorable Mention All-Region as a freshman for the Trioton. During his high school career at Ankeny, he was named First Team All-Central Conference twice and was selected to play in the IHSBCA Senior All Star Series.
“Jayden is one of the most competitive pitchers we’ve seen at the JUCO level,” said Porter. “He is fearless on the mound with overpowering ‘stuff’. He also keeps the defense in the game with his command. He is a great addition to our pitching staff.”
Ryan Mendez | RHP | Omaha, Neb. | 6-0 | 180 | L/R
An Omaha native from Millard North High School, Mendez comes to the Mavericks as the No. 6 ranked pitcher in the state per Prep Baseball Report and 19th overall. He is a four-year letterwinner for the Mustangs under head coach Dave Cork.
“Ryan has incredible poise and competitiveness on the mound,” said Porter. “He has been a rock for Coach Cork’s Mustangs pitching staff since his sophomore year and has a very high ceiling. He is a great addition to our Maverick family.”
Preston Menicucci | RHP | Omaha, Neb. | 6-2 | 188 | R/R
Menicucci is the No. 7 ranked pitcher and No. 20 overall per PRB with three years of letterwinning experience under head coach Steve Frey at Millard West High School. The Omaha native most recently helped his team achieve a state championship as a junior.
“Preston came to a camp his Junior year and wowed our staff,” said Porter. “He has a great mound presence and commands the zone with multiple pitches. He was a huge part of Coach Frey’s Wildcat team that won the state championship last year. We are thrilled to have Preston in our family.”
Zach Munson | RHP | Omaha, Neb. | 5-10 | 200 | L/R
Munson signs with the Mavericks out of Southeast Community College where he is a pitcher for the Storm. Prior to his JUCO experience, Munson was a four-year letterwinner at Omaha Burke High School where he helped his team to an American Legion summer state championship.
“Zach is a powerful right handed pitcher with a great presence on the mound,” said Porter. “He was successful for Coach Hodges at Omaha Burke and developed greatly for Coach Parks at SCC. He is a wonderful person and player and we are thrilled to have him join our program.”
Eduardo Noguera | C | Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic | 5-10 | 200 | R/R
Noguera joins Omaha where he prepped at Cenapec in Santo Domingo. At catcher, he appeared in 51 games and batted .311 with a .508 slugging percentage. Noguera also had 55 hits, 31 RBI and 17 doubles and six homers in his first season at Iowa Central CC.
“Eddy is a plus defender behind the plate and is just as talented offensively,” said Porter. “He handles the ICCC pitching staff with a professional style and has been a large part of their recent success. We are thrilled to have Eddy in our program.”
Jaxson Simmerman | C | Seward, Neb. | 5-10 | 195 | R/R
Simmerman comes the Maverick program from Seward High School where he is the No. 2 ranked catcher and No. 12 ranked player overall per Prep Baseball Report. As a junior, Simmerman tallied a .419 batting average with 26 hits, 26 runs scored and 19 RBI. He also set school records in on-base percentage (.560) and walks (19). Simmerman’s accolades include All-State First Team by Omaha World-Herald and Lincoln Journal-Star along with Super State Second Team recognition. Last season, his team finished as the district champions.
“We’ve been recruiting Jaxson since early on in his junior year of high school and he was our first commit in the 2020 class,” said Porter. “Jaxson is a plus defender behind the plate and can hit for power and average at the plate. He is a great addition to our Maverick family.”
Casey Young | LHP/OF | Winterset, Iowa | 6-1 | 210 | L/L
Lastly, Young joins Omaha as the top-ranked pitcher and the No. 8 overall player in the state of Iowa per Prep Baseball Report. At Winterset High School, Young is a three-time all-conference, all-district and academic all-state for the Huskies. Last season, he recorded a 1.13 ERA and hit .456 from the plate. He also helped his team reach the state tournament for the first time in 32 years where the team placed third.
“Casey is talented two-way player from Winterset, Iowa,” said Porter. “He is a wonderful player and person with a fearless attitude that he carries with him on the mound and at the plate. He is a great addition to our baseball family.”
