UNO Softball falls to Wichita State and North Texas

WICHITA, Kan. – The Mavericks dropped two on the opening day of the Wichita State Tournament. The Shockers narrowly escaped with a 1-0 win in game one, while the Mean Green of North Texas took a 10-0 win in five innings during game two.

Omaha falls to 4-12 on the year with the losses.

Game One: Wichita State 1, Omaha 0
How It Happened

  • The Mavericks got out of a close situation in the first inning after allowing a single, double and walk to fill the bases with one out. Omaha made a play at the plate on R. Bucks’ hit to first base to get their second out of the game. The next at-bat would fly out to left leaving the game tied 0-0 after one.
  • Jamie White recorded Omaha’s first hit of the game in the top of the second, while Lexi Burkhardt singled to right in the top of the fourth. Taylor Johnson kept a three-game hitting streak alive in the fifth, but the Mavericks couldn’t get a run across the plate.
  • M. Perrigan led off the bottom of the sixth with a single to right field, and L. Johnson came in to pinch run. Johnson scored two at-bats later on a wild pitch sealing the 1-0 win for WSU.

Inside the Box Score

  • White finished with a team-best two hits in the contest, while Burkhardt and Johnson’s hits made up the other two for Omaha.
  • Johnson was on a three-game hitting streak prior to first pitch. Her hit in the fourth extended her streak to four straight games with a hit.
  • Sydney Nuismer pitched a complete game in the circle. She falls to 1-3 on the year. Nuismer tallied two strikeouts over the six innings.

Game Two: North Texas 10, Omaha 0 (5 inn.)
How It Happened

  • The Mean Green used an eight run second inning to pull away early from the Mavericks Thursday afternoon. Five of the eight runs were unearned after a series of errors and wild pitches from Omaha.
  • North Texas led 5-0 with one out forcing a change in the circle. Sydney Hampton came in to relieve Kamryn Meyer. The Mean Green used a wild pitch and two more hits to get three more runs across the plate.
  • UNT added another to the board in the top of the third. Lewis sent a double to left center and scored on a single from Callahan down the left field line to give the Mean Green a 9-0 lead.
  • Emily Klosterman and Allison Helton recorded singles in the bottom of the third in an attempt to spark the Omaha offense, but both would get left on base after two quick outs to end the inning.
  • Gamble led off the fourth with a double to left center. She scored on UNT’s next at-bat with a single from Holguin. The Mean Green would hold on to win 10-0 in five innings.

Inside the Box Score

  • Helton, Burkhardt, and Klosterman combined for Omaha’s three hits in the game.
  • Burkhardt tallied the Mavericks’ only multi-base hit with a double in the first.
  • Klosterman recorded the only stolen base of the game.
  • Meyer made the start in the circle and falls to 2-4 on the year.
  • Hampton pitched the final 3.2 innings of the game and tallied four strikeouts.

  • Omaha will open Friday action with another chance vs. North Texas. The teams meet at 10 a.m. The Mavericks will then play Missouri State at 3 p.m.
