Wayne State Volleyball sweeps St. Cloud State

Freshman outside hitter Kelsie Cada recorded a team-high 12 kills while WSC recorded 11 blocks and forced 22 attack errors as the 11th-ranked Wildcats swept #8 St. Cloud State 25-20, 25-22 and 25-19 in Northern Sun Conference volleyball Saturday afternoon at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. WSC is now 17-3 and 8-3 in the NSIC while SCSU is 15-4 and 7-4 in league play.

In the first set with the score tied at 9-9, WSC took control of the set with five straight points for a 14-9 lead and the Wildcats finished with a 25-20 set win. Jaci Brahmer and Cada each had four kills to lead the ‘Cats.

The second set saw two lead changes and six ties and saw both teams make runs. With SCSU leading 13-11, WSC scored five straight points to force a Husky timeout. WSC built a 21-15 led, but the Huskies got within 24-22 to force a WSC timeout before the ‘Cats got a Brahmer kill on set point for a 25-22 win.

WSC forced nine attack errors on SCSU in the third set, highlighted by four blocks, as the Wildcats finished the match with a 25-19 third set win.

Wayne State hit .270 in the match with 45 kills and just 11 errors on 126 attacks while SCSU hit .127 with 37 kills, 22 errors and 118 attacks. SCSU held a 61-50 edge in digs, but WSC outblocked the Huskies 11-2.

Cada paced WSC with 12 kills followed by Tarrin Beller with nine and Brahmer eight. Brahmer had six blocks with Beller and Rachel Walker adding five apiece. Walker handed out 29 set assists while Haley Kauth notched 17 digs with Maddie Duffy adding 15 to go with two service aces.

The Wildcats be on the road next weekend visiting Minnesota Crookston Friday at 6 p.m. and Bemidji State Saturday for a 1 p.m. contest.
